Recent Reports about tank closures
Recent reports in the media may have left an impression that closure milestones are being set to close 26-40 tanks over the next four years. This is not the case. The federal Department of Energy (USDOE) has not discussed such a proposal with the Washington State Department of Ecology (Ecology). While Ecology supports any effort to remove waste from the tanks as quickly as possible, we are also committed to ensuring that the quality of the cleanup is not compromised in an effort to complete the job faster. Ecology expects USDOE to meet the current milestones for treating all of the tank waste by 2028. Any proposal to accelerate that schedule must be based on the use of proven technology and result in clean-up levels that protect our citizens and the environment.
